Little Italy

Piccolo Opens

Although there isn’t a book saying so (yet), the French aren’t the only ones who don’t get fat.

Italians gorge carbs and imbibe heavily, and 40 years later they’re Sophia Loren. The secret? They keep everything piccolo (Italiano for “small”).

The guys behind Lava Lounge and Smallbar Division Street are bringing the trend to the Midwest. Piccolo, opening tomorrow in the Ukie Village, is a casual cafe serving Italian delicacies that won’t cause post-meal gut busting.

Cream-tinted tin ceilings, exposed brick, and local art make for a bright, cozy space. Chef Eddie Navar (Hot Chocolate, Carnivale) whips up mix-and-match bruschetta bites (try the Brie-honey-prosciutto combo and white anchovy with pesto-infused oil), made-to-order panini, and fresh salads.

And then there’s gelato made with all-natural ingredients and fresh fruit purees. Twenty light, indulgent flavors rotate seasonally, like choco-cayenne, lemon basil, and honey lavender.

One bite and you’ll want to try them sm’all.

Piccolo, 859 North Damen Avenue, at Iowa Street (773-772-3355).
