Rhyme Fest

“Everyday People,” by Kevin Coval

You greet panhandlers by name and know the UPS guy’s birthday.

It’s safe to say you’re a people person.

So is Kevin Coval, a local writer who waxes poetic (literally) about common folks in his new book, Everyday People, which comes out tomorrow.

A frequent spoken-word performer on Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry, Coval uses street slang and hip-hop rhythms to explore gritty city living (a la Allen Ginsberg and Carl Sandburg).

In “Wet July,” a couple strolls past Reckless Records and Wrigley Field in the damp summer heat. A Wicker Park window shopper marvels at a bizarre display of incense, beef jerky, and bleach in “The Corner Store.”

Coval’s doing live readings around the city throughout October. It’s no surprise he warms up quickly to crowds.

Kind of like you.

Available at Quimby’s Bookstore, 1854 West North Avenue, at Honore Street (773-342-0910). For more information, go to kevincoval.com.
