Heidi: This week, Project Runway has a special guest judge, an up-and-coming designer with superb couture chops.
Tim: Gather round and meet School of the Art Institute grad Melissa Serpico Kamhout (oohs and aahs). Melissa, tell us about yourself.
Melissa: I’m influenced by art and architecture, so my clothes have a sculptural quality. I stitch and drape by hand, using only the finest silks and wools.
Tim: Where can we find your clothes?
Melissa: My brand new Wicker Park store is filled with ready-to-wear pieces: modern holiday dresses, edgy pants, skirts, and wool coats lined with silk charmeuse. I also sell hand-woven leather bracelets, hats, and headbands that I embellish with beading and fabric from vintage dresses.
Tim: Fab! Anything else?
Melissa: I’ll custom design any garment or accessory to order.
Heidi: Who’s the big Gunn now?
Serpico, 1514 North Ashland Avenue, at Le Moyne Street (773-252-5940 or serpico-collection.com.
