They say an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Then again, an ounce of prevention’s worth a pound (or, um, ten) of cure.

In the face of vague adages, we must improvise.

Get your daily dose with a homemade pie from the Pie Mistress — a.k.a. Risa Beckwith — a local gal who bakes to order and delivers to your door.

With firm instructions from her granny, Beckwith entered the Bucktown Pie Contest, receiving rave reviews from tasters. She sticks to organic ingredients, hitting up farmers markets whenever possible. For her glorious apple pies, Beckwith visits orchards herself (in season, of course).

Customer favorites include pumpkin, walnut, raspberry currant, and cherry, but the Mistress will bake whatever you fancy. She’ll even make vegan treats for those who don’t love the lard.
