You once considered a sweaty night of grinding at Excalibur to be romantic. Raise that bar at The 44th Ward’s new Date Deck, opening tonight (weather permitting).
Set on the outdoor patio, it has just one table for two, so there are no distractions. Strung lights, stained glass windows, and antique mirrors set the scene; an iPod dock lets you choose the music (cue Al Green).
The new chef, Jon-Antony, may have lofty origins (he’s worked with Art Smith and the Hearty Boys), but his menu is down to earth. The Onion Rings of Fire (spiked with jalapenos) are worth skipping a postdate make-out. But sharing a gooey Big Cheese sandwich (twice-grilled, Parmesan-dipped, marmalade galore) gets you back in the mood.
The table’s hard to come by. So The Ward’s saving the first spots for DailyCandy readers — and popping open a free bottle of champagne for the first ten people who make a reservation.
The 44th Ward, 3542 North Halsted Street, at Addison Street (773-857-2911 or the44thward.com). Reservations required. For DailyCandy offer, e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org with DailyCandy in the subject line.
