In a single-handed effort to overthrow the mayor, you’ve boycotted parking until further notice. Your new ride of choice: a custom bicycle from J. Tati.
At a workbench in Obama’s old Hyde Park Senate office, the Tati Cycles owner constructs one-of-a-kind rides from scratch. His specialty is recreating old-school styles from 1920s to 1950s Paris, Japan, and London, using hypermodern materials.
Over an espresso or tea, you and Tati will chat about your dream wheels, poring over color swatches and portfolios for inspiration. Next, he’ll e-mail you 3-D models to finalize the design, down to the elaborate details (one vintage-minded client requested hand-dyed cotton grips, wood fenders, and a leather saddle). Don’t be intimidated by his cyclephile clientele (one flies in annually from New York for the latest model) — Tati’s a man of the people.
The most basic bikes cost about $700, but customization can drive the price up to around $3,000. Don’t even think about paying in quarters.
Tati Cycles, 1013 East 53rd Street, at Ellis Avenue (773-598-8284 or taticycles.com). By appointment only.
