Chicago coffee joints are fairly predictable (beans, croissants, mustaches). Sip Coffeehouse breaks away from the cup wielders, though. Once a month, you can get your joe with an authentic Indonesian buffet from The Rice Table for just $12.
Helmed by mother-and-son team Priscilla-Jane and Chris Reed, The Rice Table is the only Indonesian catering company in the city. Born in West Java, Priscilla-Jane has dozens of family recipes at her fingertips; Chris trained at Kendall, adding technique to tradition.
All tastings are themed (street food, vegan, seafood), BYO, and served with rice. Dip crispy fried prawn crackers and cold veggie salad into creamy peanut sauce; snack on a sweet-spicy mix of fried tempeh (fun fact: It originated in Indonesia), chiles, palm sugar, and soy; try mackerel wrapped in banana leaves; savor tender beef in a coconut broth.
Then ask them to cater your next party.
Available online at thericetable.com. Sip Coffeehouse, 1223 West Grand Avenue, at Ogden Avenue (312-563-1123). Next tasting, September 16, 6:30-10 p.m.
