You’ve traversed the same street countless times on your hazy morning commute. At this point, you don’t pay much attention, honestly. We feel your pain (sort of).
On a recent saunter in the South Loop, we saw something we’d never seen before: Rise ’n Roll Amish Market. Tucked behind some scaffolding, it’s easy to miss. Good thing we didn’t.
The shop is operated by a contingent of Amish from Illinois to Indiana. Cashiers wear bonnets and aprons and couldn’t be friendlier. Samples abound, from chewy, peanut butter-chocolate granola bars to buttery discs of peanut crunch candy to the most spectacular donut we’ve had in recent memory: rolled in caramel, finished with powdered sugar, and light as air.
The Amish bake with natural, preservative-free ingredients, and it shows. Chewy cinnamon rolls go great with a cup of coffee (free with any purchase); fresh breads (onion garlic, cinnamon) are a customer favorite.
Stock up on assorted cheese (made on an Amish dairy in Indiana), jams, pickles, and snacks. Credit the hand-rolled butter, sold in gigantic, two-pound blocks, with the delicious baked goods.
Rise ’n Roll Amish Market, 42 South Clark Street, between Monroe and Madison Streets (312-269-0037 or risenrollbakery.com).
