Jazz Up Coffee with Jo Snow Artisanal Syrups

Flavored Syrups for Lattes, Ice Cream, and More

jo snow syrups!

What do you get when you lock two foodies in a car for hours?
a) A dangerous cook-off.
b) A reality TV show.
c) A brainstorming session for the name of a new flavored syrup company.

The answer is C. Melissa Yen (of now-shuttered, much-loved Vella Cafe) dreamed up her new company’s name, Jo Snow, while on a road trip with Milk and Honey’s Carol Watson. The collection of artisanal syrups (pictured) launches tomorrow.

The playful combos start with evaporated cane juice and marinate in a blend of spices, herbs, and natural extracts. The results are nothing short of intoxicating: A spoonful of cafe de olla (molasses, brown sugar, cinnamon, cloves, orange) spruces up your morning coffee. Cardamom-rosewater goes great in lattes. Splash tangerine-lavender-honey into a glass of gin and prosecco. Fig-vanilla-black pepper does wonders atop ice cream. And that’s to say nothing of ginger-passion fruit or hibiscus-basil-orange blossom.

New flavors will pop up seasonally. So you’ll have multiple choices.

Available at Southport Grocery & Cafe, 3552 North Southport Avenue, at Addison Street (773-665-0100 or southportgrocery.com); Provenance Food & Wine, 2528 North California Avenue, between Logan Boulevard and Altgeld Street (773-384-0699 or provenancefoodandwine.com); by e-mail order (melissa@josnowsyrups.com).
