Somewhere between “just add water” and “stir until not clumpy,” you tired of ready-mix desserts.
Think outside the box with Vosges Haut-Chocolat’s new gourmet baking kits. The five sugary varieties are accessible enough for amateur cooks (easy instructions and tips abound) but still keep advanced bakers on their toes (opportunities to add a little flair).
We tested three kits, with sweet results.
Caramel Toffee Chocolate Chunk Brownies
The process: The least labor intensive of the bunch required mixing the bagged ingredients included in the kit. Most of our time was spent breaking up stuck-together toffee chunks (also supplied).
The flair: For a glossy shine, double heat a butter/sugar mixture. Tacks on three to five minutes.
The result: Rich, chewy bites of heaven. On the third day, they were just as yummy as the first.
Love Goddess Chocolate Cake
The process: The lengthy directions were daunting at first. But once we had our three pans buttered, things went quickly. Cocoa mix met boiled water; butter, eggs, and vanilla met sugar; everything went happily into the oven.
The flair: Buy a few extra ingredients to make your own whipped cream or chocolate ganache frosting (instructions included).
The result: Dear Goddess, it’s us, DailyCandy. We think you’re divine and not at all dry.
The Ultimate Chocolate Chip Cookies
The process: It was a cinch — melting butter and combining a few supplied mix bags together. Oh, and cracking two eggs.
The flair: Directions had us stacking batter on the baking sheet in snowman shapes (small balls one atop the other), then pressing everything down into singular mounds.
The result: On the verge of being too hard (respect the thirteen-minute bake time, please), the cookies still won our stomachs over with flavor balance and devilishly large chocolate chips.
