Breaking news! Flying saucers have been sighted in the area. Families are advised to stay cool and report to the nearest sledding hill for an encounter.
Soldier Field
A wildflower-blanketed hill blossoms into the 220-foot-long sledding slope in winter. The views are great, and even when it isn’t snowing you can have the ride of your life because the Park District puffs out faux flakes. East Waldron Drive, at Museum Campus Drive (312-235-7000). Open dawn-11 p.m.; admission is free.
Swallow Cliff Woods
Satisfy your need for speed at the South Side forest preserve, where a steep hill is best tackled with a chaperone (mom, hold on to your whizzing little one). You’ll spot sledders of all ages, including belly-down daredevils and impromptu racers. Route 83, at US-45, Palos Park (800-870-3666). Open 8 a.m.-10 p.m.; admission is free.
Schiller Woods
The tame at heart can easily conquer this soft-angled slope, where many kiddos careen by on inner tubes instead of sleds. It lies in an unlit patch of the Northeast Side forest preserve that’s spangled by pretty white oak trees. West Irving Park Road, at North Cumberland Avenue (800-870-3666). Open 8 a.m.-sunset; admission is free.
Now you’re up to speed.
