A hipster approach to home on the range

Orange County-based event stylist Jesi Haack already enchants with her wedding designs. So when she mentioned her first foray into kids’ parties was in the works, we stayed on her trail for months. It paid off when we saw the powwow-meets-minimal first birthday party she created.

Tell us about the party.
A double-booked park meant the affair had to be moved inside, but we still had plenty of room to set up a cluster of teepees for crawlers to explore. Older guests stirred infused lemonade with feather-topped swizzle sticks.

How did you set the scene?
I painted chair cushions with geometric designs and snipped burlap into crowns; dream catchers that I made for Miley Cyrus’s 18th birthday bash got a second go-round when I added beads and neon twine.
And a cake with nary a curlicue?
Sweet and Saucy Shop let the pure white frosting do the talking and topped it with a garland of feathers.

That’s the best trick we’ve ever seen to prevent showdowns over slices with flowers.
