A Craft Riot

The great masters always proved the genius in their form.

Leonardo painted the Mona Lisa on wood. Michelangelo carved David in stone. Mecier immortalized Farrah Fawcett with beans.

Okay, so some masters are greater than others.

Still, we can’t help but see some (twisted) genius in the work of portrait artist Jason Mecier. He uses everyday household items (candy, yarn, pencils, acrylic nails — to name just a few) to make brilliantly clever one-of-a-kind mosaics that are perfect renderings of the casts of classic television shows (The Dukes of Hazzard, Charlie’s Angels, The Golden Girls), musical acts (KISS, Nancy Sinatra, Michael Jackson), and run-of-the-mill icons (Freud, Elvira, Tammy Faye).

Mecier also does custom portraits. Just send him a photo along with a few instructions. He can use your hobby mementos, personal items, or do it all off the cuff in about three weeks.

Simply amazing. Though we can’t help but wonder: What would Donatello have done with rubber bands and bobby pins?
