It’s that time again — when we prepare to ring in the new by celebrating the best of the past year. So this week, we give you some of our favorite stories from 2006.

Look on the bright side.

Yes, Torino may have been a bust for the spoon-on-the-nose race (lousy Canadian judges), but Beijing’s right around the corner.

And we’ve already discovered the sport that’s going to take the summer Olympics by storm: cracker throwing.

That’s right. And you’ll owe your place on the podium to the Crazie Cracker. Developed by a Fort Worth company, this wafer flinger’s made to hurl small, round, flat objects high into the air.

Just hold onto the grip, load up a Ritz, and let ’er rip. The wafer soars into the heavens, which makes it ideal for the trained skeet shooter, avid seagull feeder, or all-around sports enthusiasts ready to take their skills to the next level.

After a few years of intense training, that Olympic medal will be more than a sparkle in your eyes.

And who knows?

All that glitter might even mean the gold.
