Road Trip to Fredericksburg

Build that tolerance then book it to Fredericksburg (“Fred” to locals). The quaint German town about an hour west of Austin flows with local breweries, star-rated wineries, and shopping that will send a city girl buzzing. Did we mention Oktoberfest?

Rest Stop
No, there’s no W in sight, but don’t expect dull B&Bs. Mod dwellers will delight in The Roadrunner Inn, a three-room hideaway in the heart of town. Or book a cabin off the beaten path with chic antiques at Settlers Crossing. Ask for the two-bedroom Indiana house with a private barn and patio (perfect for sipping local vino).

Toasts of the Town
Tucked in the heart of Texas’s grape-growing region, Fredericksburg has oodles of wineries, breweries, beer gardens, and wine bars — especially on the main drag. The cool kids are at new cocktail lounge Proof (215 West Main Street; 830-992-2665) for the swanky fireplace and groovy dance floor. Ten miles out of town, Torre di Pietra won’t disappoint, especially on Saturday afternoons when live music plays.

Soak up the Suds
Recover from vineyard hopping at The Nest Restaurant, a cozy 1900s home serving quail, lamb, and spinach-stuffed chicken. Don’t miss the eclectic, seasonal menu at Navajo Grill or the rustic-chic outdoor patio. For a sugar high, try the cinnamon chocolate Mexican cake at Rather Sweet Bakery & Cafe.

Shop Talk
Paint the town at Red, an ubercool boutique with home finds (furniture, candles, pillows). Find vintage scarf dresses by local label Ruffled and trendy pieces at Root. On the way out, hit hip kid boutique Beulah’s next door.

Sugar High
Swing by Enchanted Rock for one last pic. A butt-busting hike gets you to the gorgeous pink granite landmark. The hand-squeezed lemonade often served in the park will refresh you perfectly.
