Lately, you have plenty to cry about. That’s why you’re going to Disney World. (Fantasy mice sure beat your rat of a boss.)
For escape closer to home, pick up Don’t Cry, a new collection of short stories by Mary Gaitskill that examine the human experience and themes of uncertainty, abandonment, loneliness, and grief through tales of ordinary people.
“Folk Song” explores a fictional newspaper story about a woman who pledges to have sex with 1,000 men. Lovers come together and fall apart continually for years in “Today I’m Yours.” A woman contemplates her familial relationships in “The Little Boy.” And in the title story, “Don’t Cry,” a widow accompanies her friend to adopt a baby in Ethiopia.
The stories are short on words but long in details that will make you cringe. Don’t expect singing pirates and fairy dust.
You’ve got the Magic Kingdom for that.
