The last time you proposed an artsy project, the kids said they’d rather clean their rooms. Save the clan from a vacuum of creativity with this DIY from CityCraft fabric boutique’s Callie Works-Leary. The whiz showed us how to make a felt embellishment for a barrette, headband, or brooch.

Felt Embellishment

Materials
A few sheets of 8½-by-11-inch paper
Scissors
2 pieces of felt in coordinating colors (can be bought in individual sheets)
Scrap fabric
Disappearing ink (optional)
Craft glue (tacky glue works best)
Button
Headband, hair barrette, or pin

1. Create a template by drawing the shape of your choice on paper. Repeat the shape in four decreasing sizes. (For the flower barrette pictured, the largest flower is 3 inches across, and the smallest is 1½ inches.)

2. Cut out the paper shapes and place them on the felt and fabric. Trace them using disappearing ink or by marking the underside of the felt/fabric. Cut them out.

3. Stack the shapes according to size with the biggest on the bottom. Glue the pieces together, rotating slightly to create depth.

4. Glue a button to the center of your finished design. Attach to headband, barrette, or pin.

It’ll leave other accessories in the dust.
