Wherefore Art Thou?

ART IN RESIDENCE

Patrick Demarchelier
What & Why:
The fashion photog icon’s new exhibit of celebrity, portrait, and nude photographs is not to be missed. It’s like taking a stroll through the archives of Vogue.

When & Where: Thru Jan. Thurs., 6:30 p.m., at MOCA, 250 S. Grand Ave. (213-621-1745).

Santa Monica Art Studios: Fourth Anniversary Celebration
What & Why:
More than 30 painters, photographers, sculptors, and mixed-media artists will open up their studios for two days of festivities. Could there be a better environment for art-viewing than an historic 22,000-square-foot hanger at the airport? We think not.
When & Where: Sat., 6-9 p.m.; Sun., 1-5 p.m., at the Santa Monica Art Studios, 3026 Airport Ave., Santa Monica (310-397-7449).

In the Mood for Love

ART IN RESIDENCE

Love was in the air at Opera Gallery last night, where the greatest of human emotions dominated In the Mood for Love, an exhibition of love-inspired paintings by the likes of Lichtenstein, Ramos and Botero. Hearts were racing, drinks were flying (literally). Overall, we loved it.

And you can pose in front of a ten-foot sculpture of Mao’s jacket.

Love Me in Your Language

ART IN RESIDENCE

Visual artist [sic] is building his own brand of art. We usually see him (or, more often, evidence of him) in the West Village, where he paints “iheart” murals on public walls and tools around on his cruiser.

Find one of his works and vandalize it! No, no, we mean photograph yourself in front of it. Then send your pics to iheart.org, where [sic] is collecting them for an online exhibition.

You can also check out the iheart diptych 001 project currently at the Leo Kesting gallery, 812 Washington Street, at Gansevoort Street (917-650-3760).

First Floor, Women's Furnishings

ART IN RESIDENCE

designer extraordinaire!Slow and Steady Wins the Race puts the art in department store. From perfume counter to bridal salon, designer Mary Ping’s installation at Saatchi and Saatchi condenses the typical components of a shopping emporium into a single room. Raw plywood panels display seasonless clothing and accessories, as well as china and monogrammed bath towels produced only for the show. This week also marks the debut of Ping’s long-awaited wedding dress: a voluminous white satin gown fastened with a gold ring over the heart and another at the start of the train, retailing like the rest of the collection for just $100.

Open to the public but R.S.V.P. a must to press@slowandsteadywinstherace.com. Through Friday, 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Saatchi and Saatchi, 375 Hudson Street, enter on King Street.

The Show Must Go On

ART IN RESIDENCE

Coco Dolle doesn’t let it rain on her parade. Though stormy forecasts canceled Deitch’s Art Parade on Saturday, the French artiste gathered her tribe of Amazons in a Soho loft to assume zebra-striped tunics, warrior headdresses, and red arrows before invading the after-party at Santos’ Party House.

Au Natur

ART IN RESIDENCE

Fashion and nature collided in a moss-covered spectacle at Matthew Marks Gallery last night. German mail-order company Hessnatur’s presentation of Hidden in Natur by designer Miguel Adrover took ecowear to a whole new shade of green.

The pieces were draped on mannequins set in natural materials like stones, soil, sand, lily pads, and the aforementioned moss. Crocheted and spun natural alpaca looked like wings made for tree people, and the Eucalyptus, a long embroidered tunic set in tall weeds, was made with 100-year-old cotton from Mallorcan almond farmers. It felt like a trip to an enchanted forest. Too bad they were passing out bubbly and not crystal-clear water collected by bucket from a babbling brook.

The collection is open to the public today until 6 p.m.
