Breaker! Breaker!

OVER THE WIRE

Missed Coffee Break at Tinlark yesterday? Doh! Java and java script junkies alike dropped by the gallery to down sugary treats and enter to win their very own HP Touchsmart touch-screen computer. They stayed to check out the current Catherine Ledner show. Some of the highlights?

Well, aside from Big Sugar Bake Shop donut muffins; Milk cinnamon apple puffs with vanilla cream; Spork pink lemonade donuts; Xooro churros; Frittelli’s Halloween-themed donut holes; and Cake Monkey pop pies, moguls, homemade Ho-Ho’s, and cakewiches, everyone seemed to have a soft spot for Ledner’s buffalo.

It's All Greek to Her

OVER THE WIRE

Valerj Pobega’s got 1920/20 vision. Guests at the designer’s presentation Sunday at The Standard caught a glimpse of the Italian transplant’s surrealistic photography and Jazz Age/Grecian influenced collection.

DC: The story of your collection in six words or less?
VP: Greek heroines party with Man Ray.

DC: What myths are required reading?
VP: The Odyssey, for sure! The collection’s garments are named after ancient Greek heroines; most of the names you could find in The Odyssey.

DC: What are you wearing?
VP: The Artemis black satin one-shoulder top from my spring ’09 collection paired with skinny jeans and patent black ballet flats.

DC: Describe L.A. fashion in one word.
VP: Growing!

Junky Cold Medina

OVER THE WIRE

This one goes out to tree huggers, thrift-store riflers and general ecofriends of the universe: an interview with Junky Styling. This team of creatives might transform, deconstruct and remake old clothes into new ones, but they’re not junky. Just funky.

DC:
Who, or what, is Junky Styling?
JS: We’re a London-based clothing design recycling company producing original, timeless designs. We have an East End shop with a production studio on-site.

DC: How easy is it being green?
JS: It’s a personal thing; how easy are you?

DC: Is fashion green or mean?
JS: Mean. Fashion is disposable. Style is where it’s at.

DC: What makes you green with envy?
JS: We never see our catwalk show because we’re frantic out back — so everyone else who does!

DC: Who makes the best green tea?
JS: Nature — straight from the plant.

Work It Out

OVER THE WIRE

We normally prefer sweaty late-night sessions to early-morning exercise routines, but Stella McCartney’s collaboration with Adidas was enough of a reason to get us out of bed — that and the promise of breakfast.

Olympic athletes bounced, balanced, skipped and stretched, sporting the feminine (delicate trims, smocking, sheer fabrics, fluted sleeves) but functional collection. We, on the other hand, just watched (it’s tricky doing the long jump when you’re busy downing coffee and muffins).

A Twist in the Tail

OVER THE WIRE

This little piggy went to market. This little piggy had none. This little piggy had roast beef. And yesterday this little piggy went all the way to the Luella show (along with lots of other little piggies) to get gobbled up by hungry fashion editors, models (they were that good) and a smattering of famous real people.

They were pink meringue pigs made by Judges Bakery, and everyone enjoyed them very much.

And all of this happened because the designer and her team read about the tasty piglets on DailyCandy last week.

We’re tickled pink.

Wood Wood Working

OVER THE WIRE

We’ve been hiking over to the Mini Rooftop all week. The tiny car company with a big budget created an urban outdoor lounge on 36th Street and Tenth Avenue — where several designers (Vena Cava, Shipley & Halmos), DJs (Diplo, James Murphy, Château Flight), and mags (Good, Vice) have hosted private parties and events.

Last night, the space turned into a runway for sporty Copenhagen design collective Wood Wood. Romantik/Mekanik tapped into the preppy yachting side of summer. Roomy khaki pants rolled at the ankle, tucked-in sweatshirts, and water-repellent jackets with the kind of pockets you’d see on a cycling outfit. Girls wore graphic-print tops, loose shirtdresses, and voluminous plaid jumpers that looked like kids’ pajamas (don’t know how we feel about that one).

School's Out Forever

OVER THE WIRE

There’s no such thing as a sophomore slump according to Chrissie Miller and Madeleine von Froomer. For their fall collection, the duo behind Sophomore NYC turned out more of their Downtown New Yorker staples (U-neck and snap tees, asymmetrical sweatshirts) and sought-after styles such as the exposed zipper tank dress and miniskirt in night-ready navy, maroon, rich orange, and black — all in their signature super-soft cotton, of course.

But when spring break comes around, they’ll be spending it at the beach. In a sherbety palette of peach, aqua, and a little bit of lemony yellow, styles to look for include sexy button-up tanks, a double-zipper skirt, and a cutout dress conceived as “what Bret Michaels’s girlfriend would wear if she had really good taste.” Sophomore is our rock of love.

Available at Barneys New York, 660 Madison Avenue, at 61st Street (212-826-8900). To see styles, go to sophomorenyc.com.

Two new Linda Farrow sunglass collections previewed at Aloha Rag. Luxe, perfect for those shady ladies who covet the vintage styles uncovered at the brand’s UK warehouse, certainly had our attention. At least until Luxe Fine Jewelry caught our eye.

Eighteen- or 24-karat-plated-gold titanium frames and fittings (including solid nose pads) are fitted with buffalo horn tips and up to 2.5 carats of diamonds. Bespoke services offer rubies, sapphires, and colored diamonds in any combination; yellow or white gold; and 30 lenses to choose from. Eye yai yai.

The Emperor's New (Couture) Clothes

OVER THE WIRE

Matt Tyrnauer’s doc, Valentino: the Last Emperor, screened at the Toronto International Film Festival Sunday, providing plenty of flashy catwalking, mind-blowing couture, and fawning head-talkers (André Leon Talley going apeshit over a massive cougar-print dashiki), but the real story is the tempestuous, tender 50-year relationship between Valentino and his longtime partner in life, business, and overtanning, Giancarlo Giametti. Well, that and a white gown festooned with fluttering, hand-sequined chiffon strips. Both will make you believe in love at first sight.

All Prepped: Shipley & Halmos for Spring '09

OVER THE WIRE

Happy Days are here again. The boys modeling at the Shipley & Halmos show were clean cut and cute as hell in wool suits, bow ties, and thin chiffon scarves. Both the ’50s prepster and the heart-throb were present, often in the same outfit: a steel gray pinstripe pant paired with a hand-printed floral dress shirt; a cuffed short and a yellow waxed canvas raincoat; a slate trouser pant, cream shirt, and low-slung silk cummerbund. The girls were harder to pin down to any particular decade — some wore Hepburnesque slacks, others walked in skinny pants with draped tanks. The space, too, was anchored in the old (Terminal Stores’s wooden warehouse alcove) but reaching for the new (blinking long fluorescent lights and an audience of hipster pals).

Bamboo-ya

OVER THE WIRE

no muss, no fuss! From the opening ukulele ditty to the models’ low-slung side buns, everything about the United Bamboo spring ’09 collection screamed, er, whispered unfussy. Straying from their usual sculptural detailing, designers Thuy Pham and Miho Aoki displayed mostly slouchy silouettes in powdery pastels accented only by geometric necklaces. The highlights: color-block dresses, preppy striped tie-waist pants, and totally wearable short suits.

Friends with Benefits: Hooray for Abaete

OVER THE WIRE

This one is especially close to our hearts, as designer Laura Poretzky is a dear friend. We watched the whole thing come to life, from inspiration (a vintage Guy Laroche dress Poretzky spied us wearing at a Fourth of July fete) to execution (an amazing bright yellow number that made its way down the runway today). Tailored chambray trousers, intricate ruched frocks, fitted blazers, and perfect swimsuits made us almost wish fall wasn’t upon us. We’ll take one of everything, please!
