Face-lifts can be frightening (see: Bruce Jenner).
But Fritz Pastry’s makeover went off without a hitch — or stitch.
New owner Travis Schaffner (The Wormhole Coffee) closed down shop temporarily, revamped the space (brighter, reclaimed wood, stainless steel), and hired a new man in the kitchen: James Gray of Bite Cafe and Pittsburg’s Dozen Bake Shop.
Gray’s goal is to sophisticate Fritz, upping the savory side to create an American-style cafe. Sunday brunch, which launched yesterday, teems with hangover helpers: maple-glazed brioche French toast with toasted walnuts, orange zest, and brown sugar sour cream; scrambled organic brown eggs with cream cheese, roasted zucchini, and onion ragout; chevre, shiitake mushroom, and grilled onion quiche; vegan carrot cake pancakes.
Grab a cup of Metropolis coffee and a goat cheese, rosemary, and raspberry jam croissant to snack on while you wait.
It’s just what the doctor ordered.
