Southern Chinese in the Lower East Side

It’s geography Monday. Here’s a quick lesson.

The Yunnan province in Southern China is bordered by Sichuan, Vietnam, and Laos.

Yunnan Kitchen, opening tonight in southeastern Manhattan, is flanked by a barbershop and pharmacy.

To pinpoint the latter, just look for wide windows, a reclaimed wood communal table, and owner Erika Chou’s overseas market finds (ferocious tiger rug from the 1800s, traditional ornamental tin and silver necklaces) hung on the walls.

Once inside, set a direct course for shared plates of celery, sweet lily bulbs, and gingko; crisped shrimp with fried lime leaves; and rice cakes tossed with ham, scallions, and tomatoes by chef Travis Post (Franny’s, Bklyn Larder). The fare is lighter than the Chinese you’re (most likely) accustomed to; ordering generously is wise.

Drink your way through six beers and three small-batch wines on tap (coming soon) or a pot of rare mountain grass tea.

No globe-trotting required.
