It was a great year for retail therapy. We celebrated the city’s new shops by blowing our budget — and feeling okay about it. Here are the spots we couldn’t stay away from.
Place to forget your tech dependence: paging through indie, manga, and foreign reads at City Lit Books.
Where midcentury meets modern: 1920s dresses, ’50s dishware, Baggu bags, and Saudade jewelry at Caza.
Closest thing to a year-round yard sale: Roadtrip’s mishmosh of eclectic and vintage curiosities.
Spot to play house: amid bedding and tabletop vignettes at Unison Studio + Store.
Dude den: Independence, for stylish men’s clothing and accessories (and not a pleated khaki in sight).
Cure for chain store-itis: handmade finds by more than 50 indie designers and artists at Paperish Mess.
Lesson in good taste: design-centric books, stationery, apparel, and jewelry at Study Hall.
Best encore: Shop 1021, the gift boutique opened by Play toy store owner Ann Kienzle.
