Carpool Playlist: Cat Doorman

A queen of Portland indie kids around

The wheels on the bus can only go around so many times before you have a breakdown.

Rotate more thoughtful tunes into your repertoire with Cat Doorman Songbook. The lush new kids’ album features vocals by Portland, Oregon indie music queen Julianna Bright, plus members of The Decemberists and Black Prairie.

In fourteen richly layered songs, the sounds of strings, horn, guitar, and piano come together in a tribute to the joys and mysteries of childhood. Our favorite is the plucky “Let’s Get Dressed Up,” about raiding Mom’s closet.

Along with the album, a companion iPad app called Little Red Wagon has been released. The interactive adventure game is based on Bright’s version of the classic song and is filled with hundreds of her hand-painted illustrations. Swipe your way from one vintage-looking tableau to another, animating a girl on her journey to bakery, orchard, and beyond — all while following along with the lyrics and notes.

It’s not the same old song and dance.
