Say Salut at The Twisted Vine

Wines and bourbons and whiskeys

In 2003, Jeff Durbin and Mike Banko dreamed of owning a wine bar in Boystown.

Plans changed, and instead they opened a wineshop — the beloved The Gourmet Grape.

This past weekend (ten years later almost to the day), The Twisted Vine opened in its place.

The interior has been rendered unrecognizable (high-tops, a sleek bar, seating for 55); a vast selection of bourbons is now available in addition to wine; the laid-back, welcoming vibe, thankfully, is intact.

We asked Durbin for his top three wine and bourbon picks for climbing temps. Grab a glass, flight, or, hell, a bottle; nosh on tapenade, charcuterie, cheese, and pâté; and call it a night.

Laurenz V. Grüner Veltliner: Austria makes a fantastic Grüner Veltliner. Clean and crisp, it’s a great wine for summer.
Billecart-Salmon Brut Rosé: Sparkling wine is perfect for hot weather. Find this drier varietal in many of our sparkling wine cocktails.
Laurent-Perrier: The demi-sec champagne has a hint of sweetness — nice and refreshing.

Angel’s Envy: I’m from Louisville, so bourbon from Kentucky is important. This is a straight one that goes down smooth.
Balvenie: A rich, 21-year-aged single-malt Scotch. Both this and Angel’s Envy are aged in port-wine barrels.
Hudson Baby Bourbon: Another bourbon I really like right now. This is a single grain from New York, a bit smoother and sweeter.
