So you want to be a writer, do you?
An editor? A reporter? A photojournalist?
Simply out of work? Here’s an idea:
Harlem Live, an online newspaper written by teenagers from Harlem, needs volunteers to help kids write news stories, take pictures,
shoot videos, and work on Web design.
Only a few hours are needed. And it’s fun! Take kids out on reporting
assignments (watch them interview, and you
might learn a thing or two yourself). Or you can come in once, teach a short
class on anything: how to write a good lead, how to choose a photo, or how to write a headline.
For those with more time, Harlem Live also needs people on a regular basis as mentors. It also needs board members, who won’t work directly with the kids, but help the organization keep running.
