Need Some Sugar in Your Bowl?

Call it a PR success story. A month ago, an album lands on our desk, where it is promptly buried under various items. A bath alarm? (No time to watch that tub fill? This handy product rings loudly when the water reaches a certain level.) A crotchless thong! (Oh, our virgin eyes!)

The Sugababes, the publicist tells us, would be a great DailyCandy item because sugar is sweet! Yeah, yeah. (Domino Sugar tried the same tactic.) We’ve heard that one before. Replace album back under bath alarm.

As the release date approaches. We give it a whirl. Damn, it’s good. Imagine Destiny’s Child as sung by Mary Kate and Ashley. The Sugababes are babes: 16 years old, and they write all of their songs. Upbeat and fun, with a little bit of Luscious Jackson-like beat thrown in, the harmonies do get a bit repetitive, but tracks like “Same Old Story”, “Look at Me,” and “Lush Life” keep you coming back. Request “Real Thing” from the DJ—it’s much better than the techno she insists on playing.

The album went gold in the U.K. and hits Stateside today. We’re crossing our fingers for them, hoping they make it big on this side of the pond.
