Good-Enough-to-Eat Prints from Pen & Palate

Just a couple of friends with forks

The history of the blog Pen & Palate reads like a fairy tale — with a dollop of lesson learning, a sprinkling of storytelling, and a pinch of painterly genius.

Best friends since their childhood in Washington, D.C., Tram Nguyen and Lucy Madison bonded over a shared obsession with cooking. These days, Madison lives and writes in New York City; Nguyen designs costumes in Chicago. Together they produce the easy, intimate Internet space that shares food lore, anecdotes, and imagery.

Nguyen likens their process to a duet: Madison writes posts based on kitchen adventures (recipes are mostly originals, with a few adaptations); Nguyen responds with complementary gouache paintings of the dish (she writes, too, but not as frequently).

Shortly after the blog launched, readers began requesting prints of the brilliantly hued lobsters, eggs in a skillet, and slow-roasted tomatoes — and the Pen & Palate shop was born.

See something you like that’s not yet for sale? Apple galette? Cioppino?

Nguyen cooks up whatever you fancy.

Prints available at penandpalate.bigcartel.com, $24. To read tales and recipes, go to penandpalate.net.
