Clean Up with Kara Calf Hair Backpacks and Leather Totes

New year, new bags

By some miracle, we made it through the holidays. The toll: three unexplained party bruises, a two-day hangover, and one strong desire to tone it down and simplify.

To ease the transition, we got help from Kara. The NYC-based label’s clean bags and backpacks come free of fuss and full of potential.

Designer Sarah Law was born in California, raised in Hong Kong, trained at Parson’s in New York and Paris, and previously worked as an accessories designer at Gap. We first noticed her wares last year, when the bags hit Opening Ceremony, and have tracked her rise ever since.

Carry it all with a slouchy, asymmetrical bucket bag in creamy calf hair or a squared-off backpack with a heavy silver zipper across the face. The busiest of the bunch is a convertible three-section barrel bag that zips to shrink. Score it in moto-inspired black mesh or lavender leather with black piping. For nights, a boxy mini cross-body has room for your phone, funny money, and personal secrets — think of it as the purse equivalent of an LBD.

Come spring, expect the same silhouettes in blues and sandy whites with iridescent foil accents. A clothing line is in the works, and judging from our sneak peek, we’re in for a treat. Follow Kara on Facebook for updates, humor, and the occasional erotic-photo hunt challenge.

Because it’s no fun to totally clean up your act.

Available at karastore.com, openingceremony.us, and shopbop.com, $141-$640.
