Backstage at Rachel Comey

Textured hair and purple liner under the eyes

We’re suckers for Rachel Comey’s designs. For fall 2014, we want to look like the girls wearing them.

On the runway, the models’ mussed, semipunk dos were parted to one side and secured at the nape of the neck. Instead of using bobby pins (boring), hairstylist James Pecis used a giant pink plastic needle and elastic string (white for blondes, black for brunettes) to sew strands into place with two invisible stitches. He pulled out pieces on one side for asymmetry, then patted down flyaways with volumizing spray.

Lead artist Hannah Murray turned the ladies’ traditional eye makeup upside down by smudging color underneath the bottom lashes and keeping the upper lids clean. Her tool of choice: a plum lip pencil. We wondered if the glossy purple looked too much like a shiner to translate into real life. But Murray assured us the idea came from seeing a stylist friend wear it.
