A Helping Foot

‘Tis the season to spend insane amounts on presents for people who probably won’t appreciate them anyway.

What on God’s green earth made you think Aunt Mildred would want a Swarovski crystal-encrusted Pez dispenser?

This Christmas, why not give something really valuable to someone who really needs it? Food on Foot is an organization that feeds the homeless while preparing them to enter the workforce. Participants are paid for services (like collecting trash in public places) with food coupons that can be redeemed at fast-food restaurants and supermarkets.

Food on Foot is desperately seeking volunteers for Christmas Day at its Hollywood location. Go. Not only because you were looking for an excuse to escape from your family, but because the recipients of your generosity will be genuinely grateful.

Which is more than we can say for Aunt Mildred.

For information, log on to foodonfoot.org. To volunteer, send an e-mail to info@foodonfoot.org by 6 p.m. on 12/24 to help distribute food and clothes at 3 p.m. on Christmas day. Bring two five-dollar coupons for a fast-food restaurant (McDonald’s, Burger King) or market (Ralphs, Vons); used blankets, sleeping bags, and clothes also appreciated.
