Spirited Endorsement

Cool Thing About Having Kids #7,621:
You get to act like a child without being accused of childishness.

Sand castles. Water guns. Nintendo.

And great animation. You probably missed recent Oscar winner Spirited Away while standing in line for Monsters, Inc. Lucky for you, the DVD was just released.

The story follows Chihiro, a little girl who finds herself in a strange alternate universe. It’s about childhood’s usual traumas (moving to a new place, learning that flowers wilt, finding your inner hero), along with a few unusual ones (challenging an evil witch with a 20-foot-tall baby, having a best friend who periodically turns into a dragon, discovering your parents have been transformed into pigs). It’s about memory, love, and loyalty. Most of all, it’s a visual masterpiece.

Director Hayao Miyazaki was already a legend in Japan before Spirited Away became that country’s highest-grossing movie ever. Two of his earlier films, Castle in the Sky and Kiki’s Delivery Service, are now available for the first time on DVD.

Go get all three. Your kids will thank you.

And then you will thank your kids. Again.
