Friends in Deed

Ten extra pounds? Messy apartment? Unfulfilling relationship? Amen to that. Counting your blessings can be hard when all you see is the downside.

The cure: Perspective through do-gooding. Women in Need, a nonprofit that helps homeless and underprivileged women and their families, runs six shelters in Manhattan, the Bronx, and Brooklyn. And they need your help.

Volunteers can work with children or moms, depending on your skills, interest, and availability. Kid activities run the gamut from storytelling at shelters to chaperoning day trips to the beach. Working with mothers involves composing resumes, tutoring in English as a second language, and mentoring in other ways. Or you can give a little of whatever you do best. One sweet-toothed volunteer organized a cookie workshop. It was a huge hit.

Have more heart than time? Women in Need accepts donations, in the form of cash or goods (clean, gently used business-appropriate clothing, kids toys, and books).

See? You feel better about yourself already.
