When last we saw our heroine Phoebe Fine, she was wondering What She Saw in the string of bozos, yahoos, and psychos she’d dated, from her childhood in suburban New Jersey through her mid-20s in New York.
In her just-published adventure, she makes the opposite journey, from the wilds of downtown’s fashion parties and coke dens right back to that Jersey suburb, where she asks herself Why She Went Home.
Once again author Lucinda Rosenfeld has absolutely nailed it. Phoebe, who may bear a more-than-coincidental resemblance to the sloe-eyed writer, is self-involved but self-deprecating, bitchy but dorky. Just shy of 30, she (Phoebe, that is) has suffered her share of heartaches and disappointments. But — bless her heart — she’s trying to figure things out: about herself, her love life, and the eccentric family she’s living with … again.
Let naysayers do what they do best. Again. We’ll just slurp this one up and wait for the next installment of the Very Fine Phoebe Chronicles.
