Used to be that if you were having a rough day or feeling a little under the weather, it was nothing a stiff scotch and soda couldn’t take care of.
In these enlightened days, however, self-medication is not encouraged.
Nowadays you drink an elixir. Sounds like something imported from a cheesy fantasy novel? Nah. Just from California. The craze has hit New York in the form of Scrips Elixers Cafe and Tea Lounge, which offers non-alcoholic potions, made from fresh herbs and fruits, designed to alleviate everything from fatigue to flatulence. The elixirs, as well as more than 60 varieties of tea, are served on exquisite checkerboard-tile tables (chess and checker pieces and playing cards included) as Edith Piaf and Brazilian sambas carry on in the background. Best of all, proprietor Brenda custom blends beauty products at the front of the cafe, home to her decadent apothecary.
If you’re not feeling better after all that indulgence, well, what can we say?
You have our permission to pour yourself a drink.
