Used to be that everyone was a critic.
Nowadays everyone’s an artist.
Or so seems to be the idea behind “SENT,” the new exhibit at the downtown Standard. The first major show of camera-phone art in the country, it’s a collection of photos by artists, photographers, and celebrities — all taken with phone cams. Ever wonder what Mark Cuban, Megan Mullally, or “Weird” Al Yankovic considers a Kodak moment? Go see for yourself. Other participants include established photographers like Cynthia Connolly, Elizabeth Daniels, and Glen E. Friedman, so you get equal parts celebrity dilettantism and “authentic” art. Inspired? There’s also a digital exhibit of images taken by the general public. Anyone can enter through the Website, so, assuming you’ve got the technology, even you can count yourself among the artists.
Which, of course, you probably already did.
“SENT” is on view July 11 through July 17, noon-5 p.m. daily (closed Monday), at the Standard Hotel Downtown LA, 550 South Street, between Fifth and Sixth Streets, fourth floor (213-765-0248). Opening night is Saturday, July 10, 7 p.m.-10 p.m. To submit a photo or view the
exhibit, go to sentonline.com.
