Welcome to the Jungle

Hollywood just isn’t what it used to be.

We’re not talking about the recent renaissance of overcrowded, over-sceney nightspots and restaurants in the area.

We’re talking about the version of Hollywood depicted in the photographs of Michael Muller. “Superfamous,” his latest show, now at the newly opened Lo-Fi Gallery (adjacent to the store on Fairfax), tells a lurid tale of American icons on the outs: Batman slumped against a dumpster, Homer Simpson doing a crotch-grabbing dance, the Cat in the Hat passed out on the Walk of Fame, a Star Wars storm trooper held at gunpoint. The sun beats down relentlessly, less a symbol of Southern Cali cheer than a tawdry spotlight on a surreal reality.

Also, it all looks really cool.

Muller, who’s shot everyone from Drew Barrymore to Wilmer Valderrama, is donating a portion of the proceeds from the sale of his photos to the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, whose mission it is to clean up the environment.

Let’s hope they start with Hollywood Boulevard.

“Superfamous” runs through December 25 at Lo-Fi Gallery, 1038 North Fairfax Avenue, between Melrose Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard, L.A. (323-654-5634 or mullerphoto.com).
