Your new black shirt is so greaser. Or is it beatnik? Ah, well. In our postmodern minds the fashion eras we haven’t lived through (and even some of those we have) tend to blend.
Not for Kudra bag designer Amy Di LaMarra, who truly understands the roots of her craft. The theatrical costumer, who was inspired to make bags after creating leather suits for a music video, really means it (and not in a pejorative way) when she refers to her signature pleated hobo as “boho.” The ruching, the piping, the gypsy influence, and the sculptural quality of the Italian leather are all reminiscent of the original bohemian era at the turn of the century (the last one, that is). The rich colors — tangerine, teal, black, white, and camel — are retro but fresh, while the vintage art-nouveau-style buckle completes the magical charm. Add the inside zipper, magnetic snap closure, and cell-phone pocket and you’ve got the perfect marriage of past and present.
And a very clear understanding of both.
