Gari On

There are times when the task at hand requires rapt attention: filing taxes, reciting wedding vows, savoring excellent sushi.

In the first two cases, all eyes are on you.

In the last, all eyes are on Gari, the new West Side outpost of the legendary Sushi of Gari on the UES.

No more griping about the lack of good toro ‘round here. No more schlepping down the 1/9 to Next Door Nobu.

Not when Masatoshi Sugio (that’s Gari) is serving his sushi experiments and a new roster of appetizers and entrees. Our recommendation: Grab a spot at the bar in front of chef Hotta and relish flawless bites of sashimi that are like meals unto themselves. Snapper with mesclun salad, pine nuts, and lotus root. Salmon with roasted tomato. Baked Kumamoto oysters with ponzu sauce.

The restaurant has a crisp, minimalist design. The atmosphere is comfortable but not distracting.

All the better to pay attention to the task at hand.
