The Latest Dish

Raise your hand if you never did anything blush-worthy in the M&R bathroom circa 1997.

Yes, hello, caller in San Bernardino! You missed quite a ride.

Because before NoLIta was NoLIta, Elizabeth and Houston was a great place to drink. Tom & Jerry’s to the north, M&R Bar to the south … and many (lost) memories in between.

New York heaved a collective sigh when M&R shuttered but is sure to perk up at its replacement, Plate NYC, which opens today. Chef Ricardo Hernandez plays it cool with a menu that’s Asian when it’s not Latin (Cuban sandwich with Cantonese pork, soybean cakes with tequila-cured salmon, jalapeno-honey-glazed lamb with tostones and bok choy).

The design is, of course, up-to-the-nanosecond New York sleek. The only thing better-looking than your date is the striking light fixture that illuminates her overpriced extensions.

In a nod to these multitasking times, next month the bar area will be transformed by day into a shop — cleverly named Fashion Plate — peddling jewels, elegant hey-notice-me clothes, and knickknacks for the home.

Can’t blame a space for working overtime. Someone’s gotta pay those rents.

Plate NYC, 264 Elizabeth Street, between Houston and Prince Streets (212-219-9212).
