Just Call Me Angel

People who publicly deny liking sweets (“I guess I’m just not a dessert person,”) are the worst kind of liars.

They get credit for having will power — but they clearly feel no compunction about cleaning out your stash of Chubby Hubby. It’s time to let the world know that they’re just as weak as the rest of us.

Stephanie Samuels’ new Angel Food Bakery may do the trick. After years of baking by appointment only, Samuels has set up shop. And there’s no hiding inside the bright corner storefront, complete with lime-green walls, cafe tables, and an impressive collection of Easy-Bake Ovens.

The retro bakery cases are filled with Airstreams (homemade Twinkies wrapped in aluminum foil), brandied fig slices (drunken Fig Newtons), and twists on the tried-and-true cupcake: Try the lemon meringue (meringe-topped white cake with a lemon curd filling) or the Boston creme pie (chocolate-glazed sponge cake filled with pastry cream). Angel Food also offers lunch and brunch, so you can bring your sweets-eschewing friend in for a meal.

Let’s just see who says no when dessert-time arrives.
