You’ve seen Sideways five times. You can drive to Napa with your eyes closed. The hostess at your neighborhood wine bar knows you by name. As far as you’re concerned, there’s nothing better than drinking a premium glass of Pinot every night before bed.
Except, that is, drinking a premium glass of Pinot tailored to your liking — from the fruit to the label.
You can do just that at Crushpad, a community winery set in a Potrero Hill warehouse that makes creating your own wine almost as easy as drinking it.
The process starts with a 30-question profile, ranging from simple (red or white?) to complicated (fermentation temperature?), and an expert winemaker to help you every step. You can be as involved as you’d like (and finally fulfill your I Love Lucy grape-squashing dream) or simply show up in ten months to collect your custom vino.
It’s not cheap. (Good wine never is.) You’ll pay about $4,000 per barrel. But considering that breaks down to $13 a bottle, you may actually save a buck or two.
Of course, for an oenophile such as yourself, does price really matter?
Crushpad, 2573 Third Street, between 22nd and 23rd Streets (415-864-4232 or crushpadwine.com).
