It’s not every day that you’re served ostrich, tripe, and lard on the same dinner plate.
Hmm, you’re thinking. You would want to eat that because … ?
Oh hush. You could stand to venture outside your steak frites comfort zone. (Especially if you don’t have to sell your soul for a table at WD-50.)
Chef Jordy Lavanderos has just set up shop in the East Village on what is otherwise the corner of burrito and vodka. His ambitious small-plates menu was inspired by a lifetime spent hopping around better kitchens in Italy, Mexico, France, the U.S., and Spain.
Dishes run the weirdo gamut from cucumber spaghetti (refreshing and fruity) to quince ravioli with foie gras (and Kahlua and bittersweet chocolate). This isn’t the same ole, and we love that.
What we don’t love? The restaurant’s name. “Secretes” sounds like a cough syrup or something a snail leaves behind. (It’s actually derived from an old Latin word for “secrets.”)
Still, the place is date-night perfect: dim lighting, dark wood tables with built-in flower troughs, a pretty rear garden.
Ready? Then pass the gorgonzola ice cream.
Secretes, 513 East 6th Street, between Avenues A and B
