The Cult of Cute

The line between cute and creepy is a fine one.

The troll doll: fuzzy fun or downright evil? Nana’s lamb and kitten figurines: endearing kitsch or weird relics of post-Depression optimism? Teddy Ruxpin: a kid’s best friend or a horror movie waiting to happen?

No one gets this pop-culture phenomenon like the folks at Charles S. Anderson Design Company. The firm (whose clients include Nike, Warner Brothers, and Coca-Cola) combed its archives and found more than 200 images for the new book Happy Kitty Bunny Pony: a Saccharine Mouthful of Super Cute.

Accompanying each sweet/unsavory image is commentary from Mike Nelson, ex-host and writer of Mystery Science Theater 3000. So whether it’s baby ducks in bonnets or a smiling bunny with a chain saw, expect insight that straddles the fence between playfully mocking and completely sardonic.

You’ll never look at Hello Kitty the same way again.
