The good old days are long gone.
Old folks brag about trudging miles through the snow, skipping down cobblestone streets, and the giddy thrill of the penny candy store.
Meanwhile, what do you get? Road rage, crappy cell phone connections, and red dye No. 6.
Co-opt your elders’ sweetest memories at Cross & Brown. The Eagle Rock shop is the boutique incarnation of a Norman Rockwell painting touched up for 2005. The countertops and pharmacy shelves are lined with candy jars and filled with baskets of beauty products, fine papers, hand-painted dishes, and homemade housewares.
But this isn’t June Cleaver’s general store — unless, of course, June had a thing for Seda France candles and depression glass. And, like the vintage finds, the price tags will bring you back to the days of yore: Jasmine soaps and card games are just some of the things that go for a buck.
So browse to your heart’s content — and think how someday you’ll be able to tell the kiddies all about the time you and Johnny shared a root beer float down at the soda fountain.
Or at least about the time you split a Slurpie.
Cross & Brown General Store, 5024 Eagle Rock Boulevard, between Merton and Chickasaw Avenues, Eagle Rock (323-257-8060).
