Major moments in the history of beauty treatments:
3 million B.C.E.: Early woman falls into puddle while gathering grubs to eat. Rather enjoys the soothing mud texture on her skin. Lingers in puddle until chased out by sabertooth.
4,000 B.C.E.: Egyptian slave feeling washed out before hot date. Drags red clay across cheeks then rubs it in. Makeup is invented.
2005 A.D.: Italian beauty line Dibi arrives in Boston, exclusively at Breathe Spa, bringing with it an ultra-luxurious treatment that combines exfoliation, hot scented steam, essential oils, silken cream, and a massage of fluid strokes to rid the body of toxins and relax it to an unprecedented state.
Treatment lasts two hours and takes place on custom-made bed in a specially designed room with rising vapors and a wooden structure that envelopes the body. The name of said object, la Culla, means “the cradle” in Italian, leaving beauty historians to wonder if that references the treatment’s cocoon-like structure or the fact that it denotes a turning point in beauty history.
This might just be the true cradle of civilization.
Dibi’s la Culla, Breathe Spa, Porter Square, 1696 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge (617-871-6608).
