A few things you may not know about the period between Thanksgiving and New Year’s:
Diets are considered null and void. Chocolate receives honorary food group status. And the United States Department of Agriculture recommends that you make sweets an integral part of your daily intake.
But come January, all bets are off. Resolutions kick in, and the pantry gets cleaned out. You’ll need to find a more convincing reason than “tastes good,” if you want to keep the treats in your diet.
We found one that takes the cake: Hearts & Flour Bakery, which is run by Misericordia, the organization that supports individuals with developmental disabilities by helping them maximize their independence and self-reliance. The bakery, which was founded in 1992 but isn’t as well-known as it should be, gives Misericordia’s residents the opportunity to work every day — baking, packaging, and sending sweets across the country.
Their selection includes gift boxes of cookies, brownies, sweet breads, and chocolate-covered pretzels. Sign up for the gift box of the month program if you want tasty surprises to arrive all year — that will remind you of your resolution long after the new year.
You know, the one to ignore all resolutions.
