Apparently, you and your mom didn’t have enough issues.
Why else would you make her hide in the kitchen during your last soiree, preparing all the food for you to pass off as your own?
For a less, er, umbilical relationship, turn to Company’s Coming cooking school.
Classes, taught by Ed and Jinny Fleischman out of their charming home, cover all the necessary aspects of throwing a dinner party — not just the cooking part. Jinny (who studied with Julia Child and Jean-Louis Palladin) and Ed instruct students in everything from what tools to use to how to set the table. The Worldly Small Plates class, for instance, will show you not only how to make lamb kebabs with peanut sauce and rich chocolate cake, but also which wines to serve with what.
And the hands-on approach of all the classes, each of which ends in a seated dinner for students and instructors, teaches the most important thing of all: how to loosen up and have fun.
And that can be hard to do with Mom standing right behind you.
