Wild World

There’s a fine line between letting loose (shimmying on a table top) and fiendishness (ending up on a Girls Gone Wild video).

In her new book, Japanese pop artist Yumiko Kayukawa — known for her Technicolor Manga-inspired illustrations — toes the line with grace and style. The Wild Kingdom of Yumiko Kayukawa chronicles her work from 2001 through 2005.

Divided into animal-themed chapters, the compilation is full of beautiful come-hither girls and their creature counterparts. A cobra in the shape of a heart engulfs a gal in leopard panties; a shy type in stripes hugs her knees behind a zebra.

Though it has a message (sometimes we’re innocent lambs, sometimes we’re ferocious lions), Kayukawa’s work never takes itself too seriously. Traditional kanji characters mingle with American pop-culture icons like lattes and cowboy boots, and sugar-coated landscapes swept with mushrooms, guitars, and flower blossoms will make you want to dive right into her naughty-yet-nice fantasy world.

Because you were born to be wild, not beastly.
