What Would Cheeses Do?

Some say it’s the little things that count.

Others would argue in favor of tasty things.

But it’s a draw at Saxelby Cheesemongers, the adorable new LES boutique that sells handcrafted domestic cheese in teeny-tiny batches.

The corner shop, located at the south entrance of the Essex Street Market, may take up only 120 square feet of space, but it’s the biggest thing since Swiss.

You’ll find everything from mozzarella to Maytag Dairy blue. Hi ho, the dairy, oh! Check out Harpersfield (with caraway), Twig Farm Goat Tomme (a little grassy), clothbound colby (an earthy cheddar), and the politically charged Tomme De Lay — formerly known as Dandy’s Lyin’ cheese (we wish we could take credit for that one).

Other dairy delectables include yogurt (lemon, orange, blackberry, maple), crème fraiche, creamline milk, and sweet cream butter.

You may feel compelled to pick up fresh loaves of Sullivan Street Bakery bread to go with. But it’s not really necessary.

In this case, the cheese stands alone.
