Lone Ranger

You love a weekend of cellar-hopping in Napa. Until the stretch limo of boozy bachelorettes and the AARP tour bus pull up to your favorite winery.

Lose the throngs on a back-roads tour of Lone Canyon Vineyard.

Meet up with vineyard owner Pat Stotesbery in the parking lot of Vintage 1870 in Yountville. You can’t miss him: He’s the Montana cowboy in the black Stetson. Pile into his Explorer and snap on your seatbelt. The road is billy goat steep and rocky.

You’ll drive through three private easements, up the creek bottom, and all the way to the top of the mountain. Wander through the vines and take in the breathtaking views before breaking for a picnic and wine tasting beneath the shade of a tree. Goodies are from Oakville Grocery or Dean & Deluca, but Stotesbery’s awful happy to oblige any request.

Tours are offered on Saturdays until the harvest with a limit of four people.

Which is just your kind of crowd.
